Member of Fatah Central Committee Jamal Moheisen said that the speech of President Mahmoud Abbas at the OIC summit in Istanbul was a strong speech in which he expressed the greatness of the Palestinian people and laid down Palestinian policy for the next period.

He told the official Voice of Palestine radio station on Thursday that President Abbas had said that the reaction to Trump’s decision would be unusual, as it was clear in his speech before the Islamic summit.

Moheisen said that a meeting of the leadership will be held after President Abbas returns homes during which a date for a meeting for the PLO Central Council will be determined with withdraw of the recognition of Israel will be on its agenda.

Aida Tuma, member of the Israeli Knesset from the Joint List, expressed hope that the postponement of the visit of US Vice President Mike Pence came as a result of the pressure exerted by our people towards US policy its President Donald Trump, who declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

On the other hand, she said in an interview with Voice of Palestine radio on Thursday morning that popular Arab and Islamic anger against the US decision is an opportunity to use this crisis to establish alliances for the Palestinian issue.

She pointed out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is taking advantage of the American decision on Jerusalem to cover up cases of corruption against him and a number of ministers of his extremist government.

The MK noted that Netanyahu is preparing for two ways out, the first is to work on getting the ultimate deal that talks about negotiations sponsored by Saudi Arabia and the second is to wage war on Lebanon or the Gaza Strip.

Palestine ambassador to the European Union, Abdel Rahim Farra, said some European Union countries are leaning toward recognizing the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Farra told Voice of Palestine radio on Thursday morning that a decision by some European countries is expected to be presented at the European Union meeting on Tuesday, which would oblige all EU member states to recognize that Jerusalem is the capital of two countries.

He explained that a change has happened in EU countries after the American recognition of Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, pointing out that the European Union cannot play a key role in the peace process without recognizing the State of Palestine.

OIC Summit

‘Our expressions of solidarity need concrete shape,’ PM Abbasi tells Muslim leaders at OIC summit.

1

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday complained that there has been a lack of substance in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) expressions of solidarity with struggling Muslim nations. He was speaking at an emergency conference of the OIC.

“Pakistan urges the United States to rescind this decision [to move its embassy to Jerusalem], fully comply with all applicable United Nations Security Council resolutions, and to recommit unequivocally to the two-state resolution,” the prime minister said while addressing the OIC summit, being hosted in Turkey.

“On behalf of the people and the Government of Pakistan, I strongly condemn this decision. Our parliament has echoed these sentiments. We all stand firmly behind the Palestinian people and their just struggle,” he said.

“Together with the OIC and the Islamic world, Pakistan has always demonstrated solidarity with the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspirations for a promised homeland.”

“Pakistan renews its call for a viable, independent and contiguous state of Palestine on the basis of internationally agreed parameters: the pre-1967 borders and with Al Quds as its capital.”

“As OIC we need serious introspection and to reflect on two key questions: firstly how have we come to this?”

Answering his own question, Abbasi said: “The fact is that we have not given concrete shape to our expressions of solidarity and unity. This has been true, not only for Palestine but for other common causes as well.”

Moving on to the matter of Kashmir, the prime minister said: “The world is witness to a similar pattern of tragedy both in scope and scale. For 70 years, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to illegal Indian occupation and the blatant violation of human rights, including the right to self determination.”

“UN resolutions continue to be defied and the just struggle for freedom conveniently branded as terrorism Moreover, another reason that we find ourselves in this situation is that we are not writing enough — we are not producing enough,” he added.

Calling on to Muslim nations for strengthening their ties, he warned: “Without rectifying our political, economic communication and our technological weaknesses, we will remain unable to mount a sustained defence of our brethren, whether in Palestine or in Kashmir. It is this disarray that has allowed the US to take this deeply troubling decision to shift its embassy to Jerusalem.”

Discussing the second matter the OIC should consider, Abbasi asked, “The second key question is what should be our response: Should we accept this as fate?

“We hope that the few demonstrations of rage will not dissipate in passive acceptance of the status quo. Our response should be a clear expression and the renewal of our solidarity. We must also urgently overcome our political differences,” the prime minister explained.

He added: “We need a concerted programme and common collaborative action building on our strengths. This will be our only guarantee to resist external pressure, to reverse our losses and to take our destinies in our own hands.”

Discussing immediate steps that can be taken by Muslim countries and OIC members to resolve the situation, the prime minister said: “We suggest the consideration of a number of options: diplomatically, if the UN security counsel is unable to respond, we should garner support in the UN General Assembly.

“Secondly, follow up on the OIC’s decisions on economic actions that can change the behaviour of occupying forces. Thirdly, seek the International Court of Justice’s advisory decision on the current move.”

Reiterating his point, PM Abbasi said: “This summit must unanimously reject the United States’ divisive decision — Muslims all over the world must stand together to uphold justice, liberty and freedom.”

“The international community has the opportunity to uphold the principles of justice and the rule of law,” he added.

“Pakistan calls upon the UN Security Council to play its role as described under the UN Charter. Its credibility will be questioned if it does not live up to its role of maintaining international peace and security,” the prime minister concluded.

Meeting with COAS

H.E. Walid A.M. Abu Ali, Ambassador of the State of Palestine called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at GHQ.

1
Ambassador thanked COAS for Pakistan’s support to the Palestinian cause. COAS reassured the ambassador that Pakistan views the unresolved Palestine issue at par with the Kashmir issue.

He said that both issues have unequivocal public, moral and political support of the Pakistani nation and we will continue to support the principled stance on both regardless of the so called reality of occupation.

Hurani: Without putting US interests on the table to be threatened will keep Trump’s reckless behavior

Trump’s decision is dangerous and a challenge, but it is not the end of the world

Calling for the unification of the political program’s struggle to face the decision

Ramallah – Palestine TV – Member of Fatah Revolutionary Council Mohammad Hurani said that Israel must realize that Trump’s gift is “explosive” and an illusion because it is outside the framework of international law, stressing the need to put US interests on the table threatened to force Trump to stop his reckless behavior.

Hurani said in an interview with Palestine Television: “The decision of Trump is a dangerous indicator of violating international law, which is a challenge but it is not the end of the world,” stressing that it demands a long stage of struggle and building on the public outcry and political positions complemented by a set of consistent policies. He said moving the embassy to Jerusalem will make it like any house in any illegal settlement.

Hurani stressed the need not to lose balance and to agree on a unified political and popular struggle while following a single strategy.

He stressed that our conflict with the Israeli occupation is national and based on specific political demands. He said: “Whoever wants to push it into the corner of religious conflict is in fact extremism in Netanyahu’s mind and now in Trump’s mind.”

Hurani pointed to the importance of building on the international reaction, especially European countries, some of which presents a new step towards recognition of the Palestinian right, such as Britain, Germany and France.

He pointed to the meeting of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers, noting that it reaffirmed the illegality of Trump’s decision, but did not state specific mechanisms relating to Arab countries and how to deal with Trump’s decision. He said what is needed more than that is to find a way to  boycott US goods, for example, or dealing with US airlines or ships. Without putting American interests on the table to be threatened, Trump will continue to be reckless.

Hurani expressed his hope that the summit between President Mahmoud Abbas and his counterpart, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II in preparation for crystallizing a more practical Arab position to take it to the Islamic summit.

Shame Donald Trump

Donald Trump, in defiance of the international community, took a major step in undermining International Law by recognising Jerusalem (a Palestinian city of Palestinian Christians, Muslims and Jews) as the capital of Israel and the site for the construction of a new US Embassy.
1
This is one step to too far; it cries for an end to usual timid and vacuous statements of so-called support for the Palestinians, a people who backed us during our struggle against Apartheid. There has never been a more important time for meaningful and real action to hold Israel accountable for its endless human rights abuses and violations of international law; simply put, for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel similar to the 1980s sanctions against Apartheid SA.
We expect pro-Israel officials responsible for the issue of Palestine at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to issue a vacuous statement that says that they are “concerned” and an empty meaningless line about “support for Palestinians and the two state-solution”. We expect no real action or solidarity from these officials at DIRCO including those who, like Donald Trump, speak as if they are pro-peace while their actions tell another pro-Israel story.
Actions speak louder, it is the time for concrete steps to hold Israel accountable for its unlawful annexation of Palestinian land and its oppression of Christian, Muslim, Jewish and all other Palestinians. We therefore call on the members, branches and leaders of South Africa’s governing party, the ANC, to expedite the resolution for the immediate downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel. ANC branches are expected to take this decision at next week’s ANC Elective Conference in Johannesburg (click here).
Branches can show that their voices are more powerful than the millions of rands that the Israeli lobby is using to suppress the downgrade resolution. The downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel will send a clear and concrete diplomatic message to Israel that its violations of international law, including its illegal annexation of Jerusalem, will not be tolerated.
South Africa has for too long maintained the non-beneficial apartheid-era diplomatic relations with Israel and nothing can justify its further continuation. The time is now, we are calling on South Africans to mobilise and organise as we will be needed on the streets. There are several protests being planned by South African civil society and human rights organisations against Trump’s move and against the inability and/or refusal by forces in DIRCO to implement countless previous resolutions of the governing party that could hold Israel accountable.
The Israeli lobby in South Africa, represented by the SA Jewish Board of Deputies, will of course welcome Donald Trump as they are as right-wing and racist as Trump but we won’t be fooled. Israel and its lobby falsely claim to respect religions freedom in Jerusalem but, for example, routinely bar Palestinian Muslim men under the age of 50 from the Al Aqsa mosque and, for example, during Easter every year, Israel obstructs Palestinian Christians from praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in East Jerusalem (click herefor 2013, click here for 2014, click here for 2015, click here for 2016, click here for 2017). The Pope himself tried to stop Trump’s latest move saying that: “I cannot remain silent about my deep concern for the situation that has developed…”. Followed with an appeal by Pope Francis that “relevant resolutions of the United Nations” be respected. The UN, as per resolution 478, has previously declared Israel’s “basic law” claim to Jerusalem as “null and void.”
