The Palestine National Council Calls on the Inter-Parliamentary Union

to Enlist the Israeli Knesset as a Racist Parliament.

The Palestine National Council (PNC) calls, in identical memoranda sent by its speaker Saleem Al-Za’anoon, to eleven regional and international parliamentary unions and associations, on their head, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to enlist the Israeli parliament as racist, anti-democratic and anti-human rights.

Speaker Al-Za’anoon called on them to take firm measures against the series of laws and legislations initiated by the Israeli Parliament, against the human rights and the rights of the Palestinian people, which are based on racism and hatred, as this parliament is in the process of enacting racist and fascist laws against the Palestinian people.

The National Council called on these unions and associations to pressure the Israeli Knesset to immediately stop the enactment of such legislations as a clear and direct violation of the goals and objectives of the parliamentary unions and associations and their conditions of membership, and to consider such legislations null and void.

The National Council pointed out that since 2014, more than 160 laws and bills have been brought before the Knesset, violating human rights, international treaties and the foundations of fair legislation, which are supposed to be consistent with international law.

The National Council confirmed, through the, that memoranda the extension of the legislation mandate of the Israeli Knesset to the territory of the State of Palestine under occupation is a grave violation of all international legitimacy resolutions, the latest of which are UN Security Council Resolutions 2334 of December 2016 and the violation of all international normative treaties of international humanitarian law, which obliges the authorities on the occupying power to respect the legal regime prevailing over the occupied territory.

The National Council pointed out that the Knesset has become one of the most prominent systems of legitimizing the occupation and its crimes, such as a bill to apply Israeli law to academic institutions in the West Bank settlements as part of a plan to annex it to Israeli sovereignty and a bill to deduct the Palestinian tax revenues on the pretext of supporting the families of prisoners, the murdered and the wounded. The draft law calling for the execution of Palestinian prisoners, the law on the withdrawal of Jerusalemites’ residency, the law of defining the bodies of the murdered, which restricts the handover of the bodies of the murdered to their family unless conditions are met such as not performing funerals and burial services, the law of the arrest of children and sentencing them. In addition to other unfair laws that bluntly violate the principles and rules of the Geneva Conventions of  1949 and United Nations resolutions, and put all the crimes of the occupation under the guise of the so-called law.

The National Council also confirmed that the support and backing of Israeli murderers comes from the occupation government and also from Israeli governmental organizations and institutions for their release and provision of monthly salaries to them, which comes in light of the rise of racism and fascism in the Israeli society and support of extremism and terrorism against the Palestinian people.

The National Council notes that the tsunami of racist legislation falls in the context of double standards adopted by the Knesset of the occupying power. For example, after Yoram Shakolnik, who killed Palestinian prisoner Musa Suleiman Abu Sabha on 23/3/1993 who was handcuffed, he received higher monthly salary from the Israeli government and salaries from the National Insurance establishment. After his release, he also received government assistance to open a commercial project. Shakolnick is a model and example of the Israeli government’s encouragement to execute detainees, commit war crimes and provide protection to criminals.

The National Council pointed out that 99% of the Jewish murderers who committed crimes against Palestinians have been released, legally and socially supported, shielded and protected by the Israeli government and extremist organizations in Israel. This confirms that the Israeli occupation and Knesset support organized crime and both act as a shield for it sympathizing with the killers and issuing superficial judgment against them.

The National Council requests that this memorandum to be circulated to member parliaments of international unions and forums and to invite them to join efforts to stop the Israeli Knesset’s Legitimization of the occupation and its crimes.

Secretary General of the People’s Party Bassam Salhi said that the ball is now in the court of the international community after the Israeli-American hostility to the speech of President Mahmoud Abbas at the UN Security Council.

Salhi said to Voice of Palestine radio on Wednesday morning that what is important at the current stage is to move towards organizing an international conference by winning international parties in support of the Palestinian cause, indicating that what’s required of the member states of the Security Council is to mobilize in this direction.

He pointed to the need to intensify talks with France, Russia and the European Union towards the convening of an international peace conference, stressing the need to form an internal front and form a strong support from the Arabs and influential international parties.

Salhi said that the US administration seeks to put the Palestinian people and their leadership between either to bow to unilateral decisions or impose the so-called deal of the century and the implementation of its decisions on Jerusalem.

……………………………. …………

PLO Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef praised the international reactions to the speech of President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday at the UN Security Council, which stressed the importance of a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, at a time in which they condemned the continuing violations by Israel against our people, with the exception US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

Abu Yusuf said in an interview with Voice of Palestine radio on Wednesday morning that President Mahmoud Abbas in his speech reaffirmed Palestinian rights based on international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, without which there will be no solution without achieving the sovereign state and its capital East Jerusalem and the return of refugees.

Head of the National Work Committee Mahmoud Al-Ziq said world government have to translate their support for the Palestinians into action and officially recognize the state of Palestine.

He told Voice of Palestine radio on Wednesday that world government support the two-state solution and Palestinian rights with the exception of the US and Israel, which have followed policies that go against international resolutions.

Palestine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Riyad Mansour said many international parties, including France, have supported the ideas put forth by President Mahmoud Abbas in his address at the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking to Voice of Palestine radio, Mansour said that Paris welcomed these proposals regarding the convening of an international peace conference and the creation of a new mechanism for the peace process and expressed readiness to consider them.

Mansour said the international Quartet on Middle East peace will conduct deliberations on expanding it and prepare for a high-level meeting to play a major role in the peace process, pointing out many other options, such as France or Russia convening an international peace conference.

He called on the Security Council to take the president’s initiative seriously and discuss it and start actual steps on the ground for implementation, pointing out that the Palestinian leadership wants a peace process that ends the occupation within a fixed timeframe, in addition to accepting Palestine as a full member of the UN.

He said that the UN Secretary-General submitted to the Security Council a 43-page paper for discussion on the question of international protection for the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.

Ghassan Daghlas, in charge of the settlement file in the north of the West Bank, warned in an interview with Voice of Palestine on Wednesday morning that the Israeli occupation authorities are planning to seize 5000 dunums of Quffeen land north of Tulkarm as they are working on leveling the agricultural land with an aim to build a city settlement in the north of the West Bank.

Democratic Front for Liberation of Palestine(DFLP) secretary-general, Qais Abdul Karim ,said that American and Israeli rejection of Palestinian President Abbas speech at the Security Council stems from their desire to impose their hegemony on any solution.

He told Voice of Palestine on Wednesday morning that Netanyahu’s rejection for Abbas speech and accusing him of avoiding peace process indicates that Israeli leadership is not a partner in peace process and it doesn’t want any solution except that which enables them to steal more lands and cancel the right of return to liquidate the Palestinian cause.

He pointed out the necessity of forcing Israel and the US to accept President Abbas’ initiative through activating popular resistance and resorting to international organizations to impose sanctions on Israel.

Hebron Defense of Land committee member Hisham Sharabati warned against Israeli endeavors to Judaize the city of Hebron through ethnic cleansing policies and turning life of Palestinians very difficult by separating whole neighborhoods from their periphery to prevent people other their residents to enter or leave them.

He told Voice of Palestine on Wednesday that Israeli forces brought a caravan into the city, announce it as an information center and sealed shut shops in a prelude for settlers to take them over and to link this area with Kiryat Arba settlement.

Ahed Tamimi Trial

Military trial of Palestinian teen protest icon Ahed Tamimi opens behind closed doors.

A Palestinian teenager charged after a viral video showed her hitting two Israeli soldiers in a case that has gained global attention went on trial in military court on Tuesday in closed-door proceedings.

The judge in the trial ordered journalists removed from the courtroom, ruling that open proceedings would not be in the interest of 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi, who is being tried as a minor.

Only family members were allowed to remain in the courtroom, with diplomats present to observe also asked to leave.

A large crowd of local and international journalists had shown up to cover the trial of Tamimi, who has become something of an icon for Palestinians and supporters of their cause worldwide.

Trials of minors in military court are typically closed, but Tamimi’s lawyer said previous hearings for the teenager were open and she argued for it to remain that way.

“They understand that people outside Ofer military court are interested in Ahed’s case, they understand that her rights are being infringed and her trial is something that shouldn’t be happening,” Tamimi’s lawyer Gaby Lasky told journalists after having unsuccessfully objected to the judge’s decision to close the trial.

“So the way to keep it out of everybody’s eyes is to close doors and not allow people inside the court for her hearing.” Tamimi arrived at the military court near Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank dressed in a prison jacket with her hands and feet shackled, smiling slightly as journalists photographed her.

Her father Bassem Tamimi waved to her from the audience, yelling out “stay strong, you will win”. Closed-door proceedings were held for a couple hours before adjourning.

Lasky said she argued that the trial could not move forward because Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and its court system there was illegal. Prosecutors requested more time to prepare a response and a new date was set for March 11, according to Lasky.

Lasky added that she would make a new request to have the trial opened.

Bassem Tamimi told journalists after the adjournment that “having people attend the court — journalists, consuls, diplomats, observers and lawyers — is very important because it keeps them safe and makes us feel that those in court are safe.” Tamimi has been hailed as a hero by Palestinians who see her as bravely standing up to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.

Grey’s Anatomy

Actor Jesse Williams, who plays Dr Jackson Avery in the popular TV show Grey’s Anatomy, has joined other prominent actors, artists, authors, sports people and icons in backing a call by Dream Defenders for the release of the Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi. The 17 year old Tamimi is being held in an Israeli prison for almost two months now.

Others to have signed the call include actresses Rosario Dawson from “Seven Pounds” and LisaGay Hamilton from “The Practice”; Lethal Weapon’s Danny Glover, former Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave band member Tom Morello; American Football sport-star Michael Bennett; hip-hop artists Vic Mensa and Talib Kweli; as well as Professors Cornel West and Angela Davis.

In their statement they write: “In the US, we know all too well what it’s like to be oppressed simply because you exist, because you refuse to give up your fight for freedom.” The signatories also call on lawmakers in the US to support a bill being introduced in the US congress: “In a bold move to protect Palestinian children like Ahed from widespread abuse by Israeli forces, Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota introduced an unprecedented bill last November entitled: Promoting Human Rights by Ending Israeli Military Detention of Palestinian Children Act. The bill has 22 co-sponsors and counting. We the undersigned call on all US representatives to sign this bill and protect the lives and childhoods of Palestinian children.”

The statement ends by pledging solidarity with the Palestinian struggle and a broader commitment to social justice: “Now, and always, we commit to building a more just and loving world for us all.”

Slams Israel

Last month at the United Nations, South Africa slammed Israel as “the only state in the world that can be called an apartheid state.” SA diplomat Dr Clinton Swemmer, speaking at the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review, went on to make several reccomendations: Israel halting its settlement construction, ceasing its “arbitrary detention of Palestinian children” and ending its racism against Africans. Click here for short video.
This is not the first time that South Africa has called out Israel for its Apartheid policies against the indigenous Palestinians. In 2014, the South African Government called “upon the Israeli government to cease their activities that are reminiscent of apartheid forced removals…”. In a 2009 report commissioned by the South African government, the Human Sciences Research Council concluded that Israel is guilty of apartheid. This position was then confirmed by the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which sat in Cape Town in November 2011.

In 2012, both the United Nations Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination as well as the Human Rights Council made findings of racism by the Israeli State. A 2017 report by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia detailed how Israel has established “an apartheid regime that oppresses and dominates the Palestinian people as a whole”. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and various other legal and human rights organisations have issued similar reports and called for action to hold Israel accountable.
